The Metro Tunnel is the largest investment in Melbourne’s CBD rail capacity since the City Loop was completed 30 years ago, this project will transform Melbourne’s train network, deliver more trains to and from the suburbs and take cars off busy roads. The project will create capacity for more than a half a million additional passengers per week to travel during peak times across Melbourne’s train network.

The cost of Melbourne’s metro tunnel has blown out by $2.74 billion, with the Victorian government relying on half to come from taxpayers. The extra money adds to the $11 billion the state government has already committed for the major inner-city rail project.

This massive project will create a new end-to-end rail line from Sunbury in the west to Cranbourne/Pakenham in the southeast, with bigger and better trains, next generation signalling technology and five new underground stations, the Metro Tunnel Project is on track to be completed by 2025.

The project scope includes:

Twin nine-kilometre rail tunnels from the west of the city to the southeast as part of a new Sunbury to Cranbourne/Pakenham line.

Five new underground stations: Arden, Parkville (under Grattan Street), State Library (at the northern end of Swanston Street), Town Hall (at the southern end of Swanston Street) and Anzac (under the Domain Interchange on St Kilda Road). The two stations under Swanston Street will be directly connected to the City Loop at Melbourne Central and Flinders Street stations.

High Capacity Signalling to enable more frequent services.

Train/tram interchange between Anzac Station and the Domain Interchange.

Upgrades on other suburban rail lines with benefits across the network.

Safety features including platform screen doors.

The Melbourne Metro Rail Authority (MMRA) is the Victorian Government body responsible for delivering the Metro Tunnel Project. MMRA is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the Metro Tunnel Project including planning and developing a project reference design, site investigations, stakeholder engagement, planning approvals and procurement, through to overseeing construction delivery and project commissioning.

This project will make Melbourne continue to be an example worldwide, giving this project an opportunity for the city to be more inclusive by helping more people to access employment, health, education, sports, entertainment, and cultural opportunities in the center of the city.
