Train Crossing Glenroyd Road (Level Crossing Removal Project)

The Victorian Government is eliminating the Glenroy Road level crossing and constructing a new Glenroy Station.

The Glenroy Road level crossing is being dismantled by dropping the rail line beneath the road.

The project will also include a brand-new Glenroy Station and station precinct, as well as better local connections, dedicated shared use and pedestrian walkways, and new landscaping, in addition to eliminating the level crossing.

Level Crossing Removal Project.

The railway crossing will be permanently removed by Saturday, May 14, with trains travelling to the new rail station.

The countdown to a level crossing-free Glenroy Road has begun. They   will be working around the clock from Tuesday, April 26 to Saturday, May 14 to remove the boom gates on Glenroy Road and prepare the new station ready for passengers.

Passengers will be able to board trains at the new Glenroy Station beginning at 9 p.m. on Friday, May 6, with access from Hartington Street only until mid-September.

Glenroy Road will reopen on May 14th. While the road is blocked, pedestrian access across the level crossing will be continuously monitored.

The site crew has put half of the 86 solar panels on the new station’s roof in recent weeks, with the remainder set to be completed in April. This remarkable system, which has been placed in the main station canopy, will be a 38kW system that will yield 150,557 MJ (megajoules) per year or 41,826 kWh (kilowatt hours) per year.

Victoria Big Build

Glenroy Station will become a more resilient facility, able to endure future power outages and other weather impacts, by installing solar panels (combined with a generator).

With the solar panel system installed, the station will be less reliant on grid electricity and will offset 41,000kg (Carbon dioxide equivalent) of glasshouse gas emissions per year.

The following improvements will be implemented during the future works:

Dowd Place will be closed until mid-September while construction of the new parking lot is underway, demolish the existing rail infrastructure, and finish the western station entrance.

Glenroy Road will be blocked from April 26 to May 14 while the old boom gates and rails are removed.

From Tuesday, April 26 to Friday, May 6, buses will replace trains on the Craigieburn Line, also in the same time, a tiny part of Hartington Street near the junction of Glenroy Road will be completely blocked.

Station Road will be blocked between Glenroy Road and Meaker Avenue from April 26 to May 13.

Something to keep in mind is that local access for businesses and residential buildings will be preserved.

This significant advancement in the railway also resulted in advancements in the roadways, as the New Hartington Street roundabout was built.
